How Do I Replace Harley Davidson Brake Pads?
Harley-Davidson utilizes a hydraulic disc brake system on all of their motorcycles. The brakes consist of rotor, caliper and brake pads. If the thickness of the pads falls below 1/16-inch, then all of the pads should be replaced as a set. The length of time it takes to replace both the front and rear brake pads will depend upon skill level, but should generally be between two to three hours.

Rear Brakes
- 1
Take off the cover to the rear brake master cylinder with a cross-tip screwdriver. Place a drain pan underneath this master cylinder.
- 2
Loosen the pad pins on the brake caliper with a socket wrench. Do not pull out the pins.
- 3
Insert a putty knife in between the pads and the caliper piston, applying pressure to cause the piston to retract. Remove the inside brake pad. Insert a new one in its place.
- 4
Re-tighten the pad pins on the caliper. Pry the brake pads apart again with a putty knife. Completely remove the pad pins.
- 5
Remove and replace the outer brake pad. Push the pad pins back into position and re-tighten.
- 6
Use your foot to pump the rear brake pedal. Fill the rear brake master cylinder to the full mark with DOT 5 silicone brake fluid. Replace the cover to the master cylinder.
Front Brakes
- 1
Take off the cover to the front brake master cylinder with a cross-tip screwdriver.
- 2
Remove the fasteners securing the brake caliper with a hex wrench. Swing the caliper out of the way and allow it to hang by its hydraulic hose.
- 3
Unscrew the pad retaining screw securing the inner pad with a cross-tip screwdriver. Remove the inner brake pad.
- 4
Remove the outer pad and spring clip. Insert a new pad into the clip and slip into position on the caliper.
- 5
Install a new inner pad and secure it with a retaining screw.
- 6
Move the brake caliper back into position over the rotor. Reinstall the caliper's fasteners.
- 7
Pump the front brake lever several times to compress the caliper. Add DOT 5 silicone brake fluid to the full mark in the front master cylinder. Replace the master cylinder cover.
